I grew up in Canada and was always very grateful for my country. But for a long time, I felt the yearning to live somewhere else, and finally made the move after years of thinking and planning.
I did months of research to determine where my new home would be and Lima rose to the top of the list. I packed up my life and my cats, arrived in Lima, and the rest is history.
Since then, I've made a home for myself and built friendships and relationships with people from all walks of life. This city has welcomed me with open arms, and I hope to pass on the experience to others.
I did most of the immigration process on my own, and to say it was hard would be an understatement! When I arrived in Lima, I only knew maybe 100 words in Spanish. With such a tiny knowledge base, it was certainly a challenge to tackle the immigration system and form new roots, but I did it.
Because of the difficulties I encountered along the way, I created ImmiGringo to help with others' experiences in immigrating to Peru. Although the internet was a huge help to me, it didn't cover all the gaps and there were many things I had to learn on my own - and learn the hard way.
But now I've settled into my new city and things have become a lot simpler and easier. I know where to go to get basic, services; I feel safe and comfortable in everyday situations; and I've set up new routines that leave me happy, healthy, and content.
It's my genuine hope I can do the same for you.
